Incorporated on Wednesday 13th October 2010, Landstruction turned 10 years old this week, and wow, what a journey it has been so far!

The company was started by our founder David T. Binks, with the name and ethos of the company being dreamt up whilst on a charity bike ride from Lands End, to John o'Groats.

Having started (as many businesses do) from a home office, then shortly being upgraded to a cupboard in a friends business premises, the company has gone from strength-to-strength, now employing 35+ people with a large office, warehouse, timber yard and nursery based on Sealand Road, Chester.

We have captured some of our journey over the last 10 years. And most importantly, we would like to thank everyone who has been involved in this venture so far: our customers, our suppliers and our incredible team, we are very much looking forward to what the next decade will bring! We have some fantastic ideas, and are very, very excited about the future.

When The Waters Rise - 2011 RHS Tatton Park - Gold Medal

Back in 2011 we joined forces with the incredible designer Howard Miller to create the stunning  'When the Waters Rise'  show garden for Oxfam as part of their Grow campaign – it was to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on women farmers in the developing world.

Exhibited at the RHS Tatton Park flower show, the garden demonstrated the adaptations that women in Bangladesh have adopted during periods of flooding. These include the use of floating mats planted with edible crops, rainwater harvesting, planting on high ground including roofs and terraces, and the use of flood-tolerant plants to strengthen embankments.

Basalt, lot's of very small basalt setts - 2011

This was one to remember, especially for David who painstakingly laid every single one of the 30 tonnes worth of basalt tiles on the project.

Working with Hugo Bugg Design in the heart of Wilmslow, the scheme reflected the need to extend the clients leisure and entertaining space while simultaneously being low maintenance.  We imported the specialist basalt setts, paving and copings and then installed them along with some Buxus hedging giving the front of the house a sleek and modern look.

We also undertook the planting of 3000 plants to the rear with the basalt wrapping around the side of the house, seamlessly connecting the front with the rear.

World Without Torture - 2012 RHS Tatton Park - Gold Medal

Partnering up once again with Howard Miller Design, we delivered the World Without Torture garden for Q-Cat, an immersive experience where the visitor could walk through the space, following a trail of ecologically progressive planting, bounded by a high security fencing, arriving at the back of a 'detention cell' - beyond the cell the visitor would enter a peaceful and serene space.

Watch This Space - 2013 RHS Tatton Park Flower Show - Gold Medal

Working alongside the designer Howard Miller once again, Landstruction were awarded a Gold Medal for the garden ‘Watch This Space’ at the RHS Tatton Park Flower Show.

Working in association with the National Schools Observatory, Landstruction created ‘Watch This Space’, a garden to raise awareness of the Liverpool Telescope, a professional robotic telescope which schools across UK and Ireland can access for free to observe the sky at night.

It was a real icing on the cake moment for the entire team with Landstruction having now won three of the much coveted Gold medals in a row.

Landstruction have collaborated with Howard and Dori Miller on all three gold medal winning projects. To see and read more about this project, click here: http://howardmillerdesign.co.uk/nso/

Grand Designs Live - Garden designer of the year competition 2013

Alongside Liz Ackerley from Poppyhead Consultancy, we 'Landstructed' the Gourmet Retreat Garden at the Grand Design Live show at the NEC Birmingham in 2013.

The Garden featured areas for growing fruit, vegetables and herbs and was a 'sensory retreat for entertaining guests'. We also installed a metal water feature which fed into the raised planters. These raised beds were filled with stone and other materials such as wood which promoted biodiversity, creating what many parents will have heard of, a 'bug hotel'. Once at the NEC, we only had a 3 day window in which to install the garden, so every second counted – thanks to the hard work of everyone involved, we finished on time and the result speaks for itself.

A mammoth turfing project, as we started to work with the North West's house builders - 2014

During 2014, Landstruction started to diversify into the world of commercial landscaping. We jumped right in with a rather large turfing job covering 6,000m2.

Putting our horticultural excellence into residential housing projects was initially a big step for us as a business, requiring more equipment, vehicles, people... However, this has now become a specialism for us, and we have the privilege of working with multiple 5* house builders across our region.

Dark Matter Garden - 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show - Gold Medal

Landstruction’s NSO: Dark Matter garden, designed by Howard Miller for the National Schools Observatory was also selected by the judges as the Best Fresh Garden.

The ethos of the garden is to encourage children to take an interest in science and astronomy – with the garden being an analogy for more complex universal concepts. The planting and structural work of the garden is used to explain how forces within the universe which cannot be seen themselves, can be seen by their effects on other objects.

New build private garden, Malpas, Cheshire - 2016

Designed by our Managing Director David himself, this project was the epitome of a ‘blank canvas’. The owners of the new build property wanted to create a larger area for their children to play as well as private entertaining spaces for the owners to enjoy… After the children have gone to sleep!

The large lawn became an ideal children’s playground whilst the dedicated seating, fire pit and private hot tub provided the perfect entertaining areas for adults. The complementary planting scheme was specifically designed to create colour and interest throughout the year with the use of hedging and topiary to frame those newly created garden ‘zones’.

The Colony, Wilmslow - 2017

Working with CW Studio, a landscape architecture practice based in Manchester, Landstruction completed the exterior landscaping which aimed to connect the building with its rural setting as well as creating a peaceful and intimate setting for its users.

At the heart of the development is a central courtyard with formal planting beds containing soft blends of perennials and grasses. A formal pool creates a focal point and bespoke stone artwork benches offer places to meet and sit.

Striking ornamental grass planting around the buildings echoes the surrounding countryside, while a meadow with mown paths visually links to the borrowed landscape beyond.

Once Upon a Time garden, Southport flower show - 2018

We were approached by Garden Designer Jason O’Donnell to aid with the build of The Once Upon A Time Garden at the 2018 Southport Flower Show.

The Garden – sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Support – went on to win a Gold Medal; it was also selected by the judges as the Best Informal Garden at the show.

The garden’s standout feature, a giant storybook with pages made up of dry stone walls, links back to Southport’s 2018 ‘Once upon a time’ theme. Each wall of Jason’s book symbolises a chapter in a cancer patient’s journey, starting with the initial moment of diagnosis.

Also included in the garden are two ‘rhythm lines’, which mimic heart beats and symbolise the energy required to overcome the challenges linked to a cancer diagnosis.

BALI award winning Wild Worlds Festival – Pheromone Zone & Botanist Lab - 2019

Landstruction were awarded a BALI award for their recent work on two gardens for the Wild Worlds Festival at Chester Zoo. The Gardens both aim to provide a fun and interactive place for children to learn.

The Pheromone Zone – designed by our in-house Design and Construction Manager – it's designed to put a magnifying glass on the world of pheromones. The garden fuels visitors’ imaginations providing an educational space that is exciting and inspirational to walk around and be in. The sculptural elements are underplanted with ‘wildlife attractive’ species, that provide food and shelter for a variety of butterflies and insects. Within the planting there are information boards with lots of exciting facts about how Pheromones work.

The Botanist Lab – designed by award winning Landscape Architect, Illustrator and Garden Designer Ula Marija. The Lab contains a student workshop and a research room. The Garden not only provides an educational space, but also provides an area for various events. The Garden has recently acted as a restaurant for a local restaurant in Chester!

This was a terrific project to be involved in, especially as it is a favourite place to visit for many of the young family's of the Landstruction team!

Carden Park Spa - 2020

Designed by Sarah Rycroft Associates, this outside space had to nestle within the rolling Cheshire countryside yet complement the newly built world-class spa at Carden.

Mature Box-Headed Hornbeams take centre-stage at the front of the project, with a subtle mix of grasses, evergreen shrubs and multistem trees allowing your eyes to wander effortlessly through this stunning scheme.

The real fun is in the rear gardens of the spa, where luscious plants and carefully placed hedging, create intimate spaces to relax in the huge outdoor hot tubs.

A fantastic scheme to end our first decade of landstructing, providing plenty of inspiration for the next ten years!
